If we think about the meaning of ” solar”, relating to the sun, and “plexus”, a network of nerves, we have descriptors of this chakra: its yellow colour and its location across the area of the lumbar spine where a network of nerves branch out.
Yellow has generally accepted associations for us of light, especially sunlight. In Aura Soma’s concept of this chakra it is also connected to learning and knowledge we acquire through learning. In addition it is the centre of our individual will.
When the solar plexus chakra is functioning well. knowledge will be used to benefit ourselves and all others, whether human or not, which brings in other positives: satisfaction, joy and optimism.
However, in our language yellow has some negative associations as well, being “yellow-bellied”, or “having a yellow streak,”meaning a person who is easily frightened or cowardly. We may wonder why such a tendency is called yellow. As it arises from a lack of confidence which leads to an inability to act decisively, this relates to another aspect of the solar plexus when it is not functioning well. The individual will is compromised by fear.
In my experience of doing healing work on the subtle anatomy, I have observed that the wellbeing of the sacral chakra and the solar plexus chakra are closely connected. When unhappy emotions are stored in the sacral chakra, the solar plexus, as the centre of our individual will, takes the strain, as we struggle with our willpower to keep our lives on track through difficult times. The solar plexus becomes depleted. Its colour may look muddy or show brown stains in the yellow.
Helping a massage patient to release tension in this area lightens the burden carried by the physical body, in particular the digestive system.
